2018 SUSTAINABILITY HIGHLIGHTS

PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST

At Mosaic, the safety and well-being of our employees are our top priorities and the cornerstones of our company’s culture. One of our proudest achievements in 2018 was the best RIFR in Mosaic’s 15-year history. Making sure our employees go home safely each and every day is critical, and it starts with making sure they come to work focused and feeling their best.

Our Interview with Nancy and Alicia

Q. Why is safety so important to Mosaic and its sustainability performance?

A.

N.C. Absolutely nothing is more important than the safety of our 13,000 employees. We work diligently to ensure that each person returns safely to their home and family after each shift. Safety performance is an indicator of how well our business is run—having a strong safety culture is the cornerstone to being a successful company.

Q. What is next for Mosaic in the area of safety? How will you continue to strive for improvement?

A.

n.C. On the heels of our company’s record-breaking year in safety performance in 2018, our focus remains on proactive risk reduction and engaging all employees in achieving the ultimate goal of “zero harm” to people and the environment.

Q. As an Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) leader at Mosaic, what are you most proud of as it relates to employees’ contributions to the company’s safety performance?

A.

N.C. Employees at all levels and in all roles are responsible for our collective safety performance. We’ve empowered them to speak up and share ideas about how to eliminate hazards and make the workplace safer. This dynamic has been a critical part of our success over the years.

Q. How does the management system contribute to Mosaic’s safety performance?

A.

A.G. In my role at Mosaic’s Riverview production facility, I help ensure the EHS management system is fully integrated into all areas of the operations. When used effectively, the 10 elements of the system—spanning from governance and leadership to risk assessment/planning and performance evaluation—continually improve the safety of our operations.

Q. As a site employee, what are some of the ways you see other employees contributing to Mosaic’s safety performance on a day-to-day basis?

A.

A.G. The lines of communication between employees and leadership are always open at Mosaic. During daily shift meetings, employees at all levels are a part of a conversation meant to identify hazards and reduce risks. We have regular safety meetings and department tours, during which site leadership gathers safety input from employees. We also offer opportunities for workers to implement solutions that reduce risks present in their daily tasks.

Creating A Common Culture in Both Hemispheres

For Mosaic to succeed, we need to not only transform our operations and processes—we also need to transform our culture. Leadership and a supportive work environment are critical to success. However, sustainable, positive cultural change can only be achieved by harnessing the power and enthusiasm of an engaged workforce.

The last year was a cultural turning point for Mosaic. Across the organization, teams embraced change and employees took great pride in improving the business. More than 3,000 ideas were submitted that have the potential to help us work smarter and safer, while also reducing costs and protecting the environment.

Mosaic Fertilizantes

In 2018, we acquired compelling and well-placed business assets in Brazil from Vale Fertilizantes, but the real value came from the group of very talented people who are now part of Mosaic. Today, the Mosaic Fertilizantes team has a unified culture that is highly engaged and collaborative. They are delivering exceptional results, and they continue to bring forward new, inspired ways to help us improve as we look to the future.

New Flexible Work Week

The wants and needs of today’s workforce are continuously evolving, and at Mosaic, we believe it’s important to evolve, too. Offering competitive benefits, pay and flexible work schedules to employees helps make Mosaic an employer of choice.

As a new, more flexible way to view the workweek, Mosaic began offering eligible U.S. employees the option to compress 80 work hours into nine business days, rather than the traditional 10. This allows employees to have Fridays off every other week. Many U.S. employees are regularly taking advantage of this program, and Mosaic will continue to look for ways to make working here work for our people.

“The four weeks of paternity leave provided a chance to bond with the boys right away and to support each other as new parents. Thank you to Mosaic for the support.”

New U.S. Family Leave Programs

Mosaic prides itself on providing meaningful benefits to support the well-being of employees and their families. In 2018, Mosaic enhanced its current family leave programs to better support employees as they manage major life transitions. In addition to enhancing Mosaic’s current leave policy for birth mothers to include 12 weeks of paid leave, Mosaic now offers up to four weeks of paid parental leave for new parents to care for and bond with a newborn, newly-adopted child or newly-placed foster child.

Sustainability Agronomist Adam Herges was one of Mosaic’s first employees to take advantage of this new benefit. “My wife and I were very appreciative and grateful for Mosaic’s leadership in launching this new policy as we welcomed our first children—twin boys. The four weeks of paternity leave provided a chance to bond with the boys right away and to support each other as new parents during the longest period of sleep deprivation of our lives. Thank you to Mosaic for the support.”

Additionally, Mosaic now offers a paid family care leave program which provides the opportunity for employees to take up to 40 hours of paid family leave to care for a qualifying family member with a serious health condition.

Mosaic is proud to offer these enhanced benefits to employees so they can care for themselves and their families.
