At Mosaic, we define sustainability broadly. From environmental performance to safety and community investments to operational efficiency, we are committed to making progress in areas that matter most to our many stakeholders.
As the world’s leading producer and marketer of concentrated phosphate and crop nutrient products, Mosaic has the opportunity—and responsibility—to contribute to the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
There’s no denying that mining and fertilizer manufacturing are intensive endeavors. Resource extraction, consumption of materials, generation of emissions in operations, water use—these activities are all necessary to fulfilling our mission to help the world grow the food it needs. From mine-to-market, we are working to minimize our negative impacts and maximize the value we deliver to diverse stakeholders around the globe. Our journey is ongoing, and we are continuously evaluating what it means to be a good employer, supplier, neighbor and value creator. Here are some of the many ways we are contributing to the SDGs.
Mosaic produced over 21 million tonnes of crop nutrients for farmers around the globe. 40–60% of crop yields are attributed to fertilizer products.
We’ve invested $29 million since 2004 in support of organizations that advance global agricultural development, agricultural research and education, and hunger relief for community members in need.
Mosaic invested over $21 million in water-focused actions that promote nutrient stewardship, habitat conservation and watershed restoration since 2004.
As part of the Villages Project in India, eight check dams that were installed to capture and store rainwater and recharge groundwater now provide a total reservoir capacity of 30 million gallons.
We used alternative source water from nine industrial partners and waste water treatment plants at a rate of 6.7 million gallons per day. These alternative volumes directly offset our freshwater use.
Mosaic employs over 12,000 employees in 2018 for whom wages and benefits totaled over $1.6 billion.
Companywide, Mosaic achieved reductions of 13.9% in GHG emissions, 12.1% in energy use and 8.9% in freshwater use since 2012.
Mosaic contributed more than $12 million in food, water and local community investments and partnerships in 2018.
